Smoked Turkey Sausage Over Pesto Fusilli

I do not like whole wheat pasta, but it’s good for you so I’m trying in incorporate it into our diet. I think it has a weird taste, I mean when you grow up eating what you’re familiar with change is hard. Well, I’ve been experimenting with it and found that if I mix in some basil pesto, I like it so much more. Steve has turned me on to smoked turkey sausage and I just love it. It has great flavor and is leaner meat which translates to healthier. So anyway I’ve come up with a recipe that is definitely a “roller coaster in your mouth”. I use diced butternut squash, asparagus, and San Marzano tomatoes, shallots, garlic, and a diced yellow bell pepper. Oh, and of course some red pepper flakes just for some kick. When the pasta is cooked I mix in some basil pesto so the hot pasta melts the pesto and some Parmigiano-Reggiano.  The grilled smoked sausage with all these veggies over the pesto whole wheat pasta makes you feel so good after eating this dish. Olive oil and a little chicken stock are all you need to get this started.
